Thailand Flood Relief Fundraiser Art Auction and Sale

Maybe you have already heard about the recent Flooding crisis in Thailand and other part of South East Asia. The damage has left thousands dead and 100's of thousands homeless or short on food. Damage has been estimated in the billions.

Some of you know that I grew up in Thailand. While my family is safe, the in-land flood swept away many places that made up fond memories of my childhood.

My friend Chris Mitchell of Q Pop Shop is nice enough to put together a "Thailand Flood Relief Fundraiser Art Auction and sale" event. It's happening this Saturday Jan. 14th at 128 Astronaut E S Onizuka St, Little Tokyo, Los Angeles.

The event goes from 7pm-11pm. It features artwork donated by artists from Disney's Vis Dev and Story Department, and also our friends at Dreamworks Animation, Nickelodeon, Cartoon Network, and Rough Draft Studios, and many more.

So, this article caught my attention today. Apparently PETA members are upset with Mario cuz they think he watched "The Silence of the Lambs" too many times, skinned a tanuki, and wore the fur as a full-body suit. I've seen that costume at the furry store, and let me tell you...it's totally synthetic. Either way, it appears tanukis are dealing with the drama perfectly well:

Trouble with Indecisiveness

I am annoyingly indecisive about tiny little things. Making dinner plan with me goes kinda like this.

It could go on for hours.

So last couple weeks I was faced with a difficult choice. I had been working on a painting for Ryan's sister. It's her extra-bonus-track wedding gift.

I painted two of the similar ones:

I like it, but it's hard to see the contrast in the dim lighting.

So I look at painting #2 I made.
More contrast here, but I still really like the birds in #1, and the texture, and, and, and... I couldn't make up my mind -_-'
That was 10 days of me obsessively asking Ryan about his opinion (and combating it, then asking for more opinion.) I did follow Ryan's thought at the end on this one, and I think it was a good choice.

I guess I should take him to Islands.

I cleaned my plate of boards a half-hour before the next assignment was handed to me!! For that half-hour, I was fully caught up, owed nothing to anyone, and I think I saw behind the curtains of the universe. (There's actually just a bunch of dust and a handful of old brooms back there. Nothing exciting, really.)

By the way...Fawn and I will be at the CTN Animation Expo on Saturday from 10am to noon. Find us at the Disney Animation booth if you'd like to show your portfolio, chat, or have a staring contest or something.

Pixie Hollow Games

It's been a long time coming (over a year and a half), but my first Disney project is about to go public. On November 19 at 7pm ET/PT, the Disney Channel will air "Pixie Hollow Games," a half-hour special from the Tinker Bell franchise.

I started on the project after its first story screening and stayed to the very end of story development, so I witnessed at least three totally different stories before the film settled where it is now. Character designs changed. Character personalities changed. We must have brainstormed and boarded enough "fairy Olympic" events to make a six-hour movie...and then it was shaved down to fit in a half-hour television spot. But that's the story process for ya...draw a bunch of options and most hit the cutting room floor.

Here are some moments from early versions and brainstorming sessions that never made it to the film:

Tinker Bell 3D

I took a 10-week sculpture class this summer at work and I made Tinker Bell!

I never sculpted anything more than what I made out of play-doh when I was in elementary school. It was nice to get to do this with instructions. Ron Pekar is a very supportive teacher. He also teaches a few other art classes at Disney.

I'm sending Tink to be bronzed this week (to immortalize my mistakes forever:) Her wings are made separately and will be attached later, like this.

I recently took a trip to the art store and came back with new brushes, new paint, new canvases, and new ambitions. To start, I plan on filling this little sketchbook with paint and hopefully a few of the pages will transcend "tests" by the end.

I'm not sure where the urge originated, really. Maybe the fall weather sparked an artistic mood swing. Maybe I've been feeling guilty that my best friend has become Control-Z. Or maybe I just need to complement my digital day job by expressing myself in a new, more personal way.

KAMEN RIDER VS SUPER SENTAI Anniversaries Tribute Exhibition

If you're in town, come celebrate the 40th Anniversary of Kamen Rider and the 35th Anniversary of Power Rangers series!

The opening reception is November 5th at 7-10pm at both Japanese American Cultural and Community Center and Q Pop Shop in Little Tokyo, Los Angeles.

I grew up watching Chōjin Sentai, Japanese Power Rangers, on Saturday mornings in Thailand (along with Dragon Ball, ThunderCats, and Sailor Moon:)

Among many series of Power Rangers, Jetman series stuck in my memory the most since it has a catchy theme song and I was really into anime super hero action series as a 10 years old girl.

So here is my piece of a character Blue Swallow (ブルースワロー) She's a high school girl who got hit by some sort of "Birdonic Wave." That's how she gained super human abilities.

Her signature attack is Swallow Dash and it is the title of this piece.

Today is my 3rd going on the 4th month at Disney as a story artist.

The time has been pretty awesome. People have been kind. There is free ice cream every Wednesday. And I haven't done anything super stupid...until last week.

We were going on the first official team lunch since I started. So I was excited to get all my team together.

And standing over there...

was the other John...

It was probably only a millisecond when this happened, but it sure felt like a full 10 hours long.

So I used one my many ninja tricks...

and got the heck out of there.

Whenever someone asks where I'm from, I answer, "Williamsport, Pennsylvania."

A common response is, "But you wear buttons," so I have to clarify, "No, no...I'm not Amish, but Amish country isn't TOO far away. Williamsport is the Home of Little League Baseball!"

That extra info seems to ring a bell for roughly 1 in 5 people. "Oh! That's that event where adults who painfully regret never making something of themselves put tremendous amounts of pressure on their kids and verbally abuse the umpires so that their team might have a slightly better chance of winning a plastic trophy!"

"Um, kinda...but I think they get medals instead of trophies."

Overall, the Little League World Series is a fun event with hotdogs, slushies, face paint, and a chance to catch a homerun ball. The event brings excitement to the city once a year and flows a little extra cash to the Williamsport economy.

This year is even more exciting for Pennsylvania fans, however, because a team from Clinton County, PA (named "Keystone") has made it to the playoffs. A Pennsylvania team hasn't won the Little League World Series since 1960, so a lot of locals will be losing their voices this weekend, I'm sure.

See those ears? We had to fight our way through a very physically challenging game of bag tossing to earn them. Stu didn't have the heart to push those little kids out of the way to play that game so he just borrowed Ryan's.

This morning, to celebrate the opening of the movie, the studio gives us limited edition lithograph of Paul Felix's painting. I love this painting (it's been on the gigantic wall at work)and I haven't seen it out there as a poster so I took a photo of the print to share here.

2 really cool ladies I know are getting married, well, at two separate weddings.

Since I'm a bridesmaid to one of them, I get to look at a lot of wedding dress catalogs/magazines lately. And OMG, there are some very interesting choices out there.

Like this one.

Obviously, this isn't exactly what was in the magazine 'cause I drew it from my memory. But if you think "what the hell is the thingy on her head?", then you get the idea.

And Google images never let you down when it comes to weird stuff. I found this when I did a search for wedding dresses. How awesome.

I draw this one just for fun. I've been settling into a new job in the past month or so and haven't had much time to draw chicks on a blog (or anything on a blog) and our blog can always use more girl drawings:)

Two Saturdays ago, Ryan and I joined a sketch group and we went to draw in Hollywood/Highland area. I've witnessed an overwhelming amount of stylish ladies wearing skinny jeans.

Everyone was wearing it, except for this woman.

And me.

Oh wait...

I think I have a pair of skinny jeans at home.

So Sunday came along, and it was time for me to resurrect my fashion sense.

Oh yeah!

They fit pretty well, I think. I mean...they were kinda tight, but that's what skinny jeans are all about, right?

We went out to brunch with our friends at Cheesecake Factory that morning. The breakfast portion isn't as humongous as the dinner one, which is good. I totally thought a pancake would be as big as a plate.

Then we went to a cast&crew screening of HOP. We didn't work on this movie, but we both storyboarded for Illumination last year and they were kind enough to send us tickets.

Things were going awesome until the moment we got home...

$#%$%!

That was pretty messy, but Ryan pieced me back together pretty well. And now I'm back to eating donut in my non-skinny jeans. High five!

PS.HOP comes out APRIL 1st. And in case you're wondering, it is way cuter than Alvin and The Chipmunks:D

Ipad Drawing and Stuff

Ryan's parents got us ipads last Christmas.

I just recently got a stylus pen and Sketchbook Pro app. So I was like - whoa! I can do digital painting anywhere now.

If I went to the beach and somehow found a dolphin who let me ride the wave on its back, I could also be painting at the same time.

I could also paint in space, such a good use of time!

But mostly, I end up in front of a TV.

For the past couple days, I've been painting at night. During the course of one painting, my ipad decided to randomly log off from Sketchbook Pro 3 times before I could save.

Why does it not have auto-saaaaaavveeeee!!!?!!

I didn't give up though. So here's a painting I did, entirely on an ipad.

Read and Animate

Last week Michelle and I went to George Washington elementary school in Burbank to do our little "Read and Animate" session for the 4th grade class.

Michelle did all the reading and I did the animating part which mean drawing really fast while Michelle was reading from "Sideway Stories from Wayside School." It sounded manageable when we signed up for it, but it turned out to be super hard for me. The kids laughed throughout our session, but I'm pretty sure they laughed at how crappy I drew.

During one of the short stories, Michelle thought it would be cool to write a "Discipline" section on the board since a lot of kids in our stories got their names written under it.

The problem was, I didn't know how to spell it.

I mean...I definitely know how to spell it! Don't believe me? Whatever, I was just blanking out.

I'm pretty sure it starts like this.

And...this?

It was a lot of pressure, and I couldn't disappoint them.

They're only ten year olds. May be they don't know how to spell it either, right?

Oh crap, they do?

I guess Michelle already kept on reading while I was panicking about writing the word correctly. One kid actually said, "whoa, that is a hard word!" At least they learned something from us.

They're almost as tall as me. I should have listened to my mom about drinking all those milk and playing basketball and stuff.

Gallery show at Nickelodeon

Every month at Nickelodeon, there is a new show up in the main gallery area. And this month is the annual employee group show!

Here is us appreciating art...and food. I didn't even know why I did those anime fingers thing. It must be in my DNA.

I painted two pieces for the show. I finished them in January and had to fight the urge to post them on the blog before the show started. But now that it already happened (cue exciting music!), here are my two paintings in the show:)

Fawn and I went camping in Sequoia National Park a couple weeks ago. All over the campground were warning signs that tell you what to do if you encounter a bear: "Never surround a bear. Never separate a bear from her cubs. Make lots of noise. Don't run, but back away slowly." They had forgotten one rule: "Take your pocket knife and stab the crap out of a bear if it gets in your face."

We never saw a trace of bears the whole time (lucky for them), but I did slice open a package of firewood like a pro.
