The Getty Garden

The Getty Center is one of our favorite places in Los Angeles. We visited the Getty again a couple weekends ago. There were these awesome French landscape paintings on current display and I was drooling all over them. We spent the first half of the day looking at new exhibitions and the rest of the day sitting around drawing and taking a nap. I painted this based on my little pencil sketch of the path leading down to the main garden. The museum is nice enough to provide umbrellas for anyone who doesn't put on enough sunscreen for the day.

Puppies Dressed As Cats

"No one wants to see puppies dressed as cats! How about CONAN dressed as a freakin' cat? Huh? Huh?" - Angry Puppy

Don't get it? Watch this bit from Thursday's The Tonight Show on Hulu.

LA Real Estate

For the past month or so, Fawn and I have been searching for a house in LA. If you're not familiar with the prices of houses here, I'll just say that a lot of money gets you very little. For example...I drew a house that costs about $800,000...

If you're persistent, you can probably negotiate that the seller fix the front door...and maybe remove the cat, too. Otherwise, expect to buy AS IS. At least this house comes with Neighborhood Watch (he's in the LA sports apparel).

We settled on a place in Burbank that is almost as nice as this one. We're excited...

Closure

Seventeen days later...

Early this morning I woke up and zombied (yes...I'm making that a verb) from our bedroom to the bathroom. As I passed through the living room, I spotted our house guest scurrying away from the TV. (Apparently he couldn't figure out how to work that stupid Time Warner remote control, either.) He spotted me and froze in front of the balcony door. Right where I wanted him!

I moved a little closer and grabbed the nearest National Geographic magazine (I don't read them, so I might as well use them for something.) With a maneuver that would make a Navy Seal proud, I opened the screen door and scooted the giant insect onto the balcony at the same time. He was shocked for a moment, then bolted away from me...right off the edge of the balcony. I actually heard him land on the patio one story below.

Phone Call Drawings

It was Thai Mother's Day on August 12th and I drew these while talking to my mom on the phone. I made long distant call to my family in Thailand every two weeks. And it usually takes about at least an hour. The phone gets passed around then I'll re-tell the story again to everyone available at the time (mom, dad, sisters, grandmother, aunt, family dogs, etc.)

This time I just happened to sit next to a notepad and a pencil. To my surprise, I made perfect sense talking on the phone while drawing.

Boo!

Fawn was in San Francisco for the weekend.

On Saturday night, I was alone in our apartment and was putting my dinner plate on the kitchen counter. Out of the corner of my eye I thought I saw a dark spot move on the floor. I froze and stared at it. Was it a mouse? Or maybe just a dustball that was disrupted as I walked by? I slowly reached for the light...

Click.

"Oh, holy sh*t!"

There was a giant cockroach sitting on the linoleum, waving at me. In my memory, the sucker was like 8 inches long, but I think adrenalin always intensifies the details. I'll just say that I haven't seen a roach that big since I was in a Costa Rican rain forest.

I tried to catch it in a cup, but it scooted under the dishwasher before I could get the cup to the floor. We've been living in that apartment for over two years and 'til this point we've only ever seen an occasional spider or one of those little water-loving centipedes in the tub. I'm pretty sure this cockroach moved in and ate them all.

Every time I walk by the kitchen now, my eyes quickly scour the floor. I don't know what to expect. If I see any little roach babies...!

I'm No Superman

I've been stuck at work all weekend. I watched all of the episodes of The Tonight Show on Hulu and then moved on to the Scrubs series. After lunch, I took a break for some caricaturing.

**UPDATE** I decided to clean up the linework and tweak some colors.

Another Fairy

I've been in a girl-drawing mood lately, I guess. The last two just happen to have wings.

Itty Bitty Kitty

Our friend Stephanie has a cute cat name Itty Bit and she's been posting photos and stuff at an exclusive Itty's blog. Today, a few of us decided to take a photo from this blog post:

...and make stuff up about it.

Steph is posting the results tomorrow. So stay tuned.

What's Up, Tiger Lily?

We just watched "What's Up, Tiger Lily?" this weekend. This girl really has nothing to do with the movie, except that she's Asian. Watch it anyway!
